After more than 600 days without playing a game, the Chicago Union of the American Ultimate Disc League (AUDL) will return to the field this summer. The 2021 AUDL schedule has officially been announced; the Union will play a 12-game regular season from June to August, with the potential for playoff games in September. The Union home opener will be played Saturday, June 5 at 6:00 PM/CT at Elmhurst University’s Langhorst Field against the Indianapolis AlleyCats.
The Union enter the 2021 season playing in the new Central Division, where they’ll match up with Detroit, Indianapolis, Madison, and Minnesota throughout the season. Formerly known as the Chicago Wildfire, the Union rebranded this offseason and will be playing their first season since the name change.
The Union are well-positioned to make the playoffs for the second straight season and even make a run at Championship Weekend, the AUDL’s final-four style competition taking place at the end of the season. This offseason the Union added franchise players from around the division, snagging 2019 AUDL All-Stars Pat Shriwise and Peter Graffy from the Madison Radicals and Keegan North from the Indianapolis AlleyCats. The team also brought back one of winningest ultimate players in the sport’s young history, Kurt Gibson, as well as three-time (back-to-back-to-back) AUDL assist leader Pawel Janas. The star-studded roster is arguably their most talented roster to date, and the team has high hopes to win their first ever AUDL championship.
