Pass the Disc is an initiative of the Philadelphia Phoenix to bring ultimate to youth in underprivileged communities throughout Philadelphia, with the mission to provide free ultimate instruction and discs to local youth through partnership with city recreation centers.
Access to youth athletic programs in underprivileged communities is limited, both financially and due to lack of proximity. Participation in athletics at an early age comes with many benefits — better physical and emotional health, greater test performance, increased grades, higher graduation rates, more pathways to higher education opportunities, and an overall higher quality of life.
Ultimate not only offers the benefits above, but aids in the development of many life skills for success — communication, respect, body awareness, self-advocacy and conflict resolution. And the beauty of ultimate is the only essential piece of equipment needed to play is a low-cost disc, yet this is still out of reach for many in underserved communities.
Through Pass the Disc, the Phoenix hope to help fill the gap in sports programming in Philadelphia, while providing fundamental skills and opportunities to overlooked youth.
To kick off Pass the Disc, the Phoenix are hosting a Disc Drive in partnership with the James L. Wright Recreation Center in the Mantua neighborhood of West Philadelphia. The goal is to collect 150 discs, to be distributed at this recreation center, in addition to other recreation centers throughout Philadelphia and at free programs and clinics to take place when safety guidelines allow.
