Growlers Announce 2019 Rookies

March 4, 2019

The San Diego Growlers announce seven players who will make their Growlers debut in 2019. Four of the seven are AUDL rookies, while Eric Hytönen (missed all of 2018 with injury), Michael Dehnbostel (Indianapolis Alleycats; 2015) and Andrew Kohl (Los Angeles Aviators; 2016, 2017) have been on previous AUDL rosters. We asked the Growlers rookies a series of questions on tryouts, making the team, and the 2019 season.

Bryce Lozinski

Why did you want to try out for the Growlers?
I wanted to try out for the Growlers because I was interested in learning more about the sport and improving my skills by playing with the best players in the area.

What was it like when you learned you had made the team? What did you feel? What did you do?
When I had learned that I made the team, I did not believe it. I was very surprised.

What excites you most about playing in the AUDL and for the Growlers this season?
Playing in the AUDL and for the Growlers excites me because I can learn from the best frisbee players in the nation by playing alongside and against them.

What are your goals this season?
My goals this season are to acquire better game knowledge from the more experienced players on my team and on other teams, learn more ways to get open on offense, and learn how to play better defense on a field that is more advantageous for the offense due to its width.

Andrew Kohl

Why did you want to try out for the Growlers?
I wanted to tryout for the Growlers because of their continued support of Arizona talent. I wanted to be able to continue to play alongside AZ friends while still being a part of the AUDL.

What excites you most about playing in the AUDL and for the Growlers this season?
I'm excited to join a group of guys that care a lot about each other and the sport. Looking at the roster, we have a lot of elite players and we've got the potential to make a lot of noise in the league. I'm also looking forward to match up against some of the best ultimate players our league has to offer.

What are your goals this season?
My goals for the season are to bring consistent energy on defense and on the sidelines. I want to make the person I'm guarding have to work really hard to get the disc.

Michael Dehnbostel

Why did you want to try out for the Growlers?
I tried out for the Growlers because I played for the Alleycats a few years ago and loved the AUDL. I enjoy the format, field size, referees, competitiveness, physicality; the AUDL is a really fun way to play ultimate.

What was it like when you learned you had made the team? What did you feel? What did you do?
This was my third time trying out for the Growlers, every year with a different outcome: cut, practice squad, roster. I had a hip surgery in 2016, and finally making the team feels like the culmination of a few years of really hard work to find my way back to playing at this level. I was really excited to find out I made it, and now that I have, the real work starts.

We have an unbelievably talented team, and I think we have a real shot at making championship weekend.

What are your goals this season?
My goal for the season is to do what it takes for the team to succeed. Play hard defense when I’m on the field and hopefully play well enough to contribute to the team’s success.

I just want to help this team win so my goal this year is to help open up the offense by going deep yet also delivering hucks for the rest of the cutter core.
