San Diego Growlers Add Four Former Aviators For 2017

February 13, 2017

Today the San Diego Growlers announced the signing of four major free agents in Jeff Silverman, Dan Bellinger, Hunter Corbett, and Tyler Bacon. All four players were key members of the Los Angeles Aviators team that reached the playoffs last year.

Perhaps the most explosive defender in the league, Jeff Silverman has registered 42 blocks over his three-year AUDL career, including a career-best 22 during the 2016 regular season. Silverman was a member of the 2014 San Jose Spiders team that won the title, and was named to the All-AUDL Defense Team last season. He's made a habit of making spectacular, corkscrewing catches in the open field, regardless of gravity's effects.

Known for his big throws off of turnovers for the defensive line, Bellinger joins the Growlers as a much needed handler leading the counterattack. He generated 340 completions (89%), 37 assists, and 16 blocks in 451 points played over his two seasons in Los Angeles.

Corbett had a breakout season in 2016, splitting time between offense and defense. Equally comfortable with or without the disc, he was second on the team in points played (301) and third in blocks (18), chipping in a solid 22 assists and 18 goals last season.

After having his 2015 season ended by an injury, Bacon bounced back last year to have a solid season as a distributor with the disc on defense, finishing with 15 assists.

The four additions are the second round of free agent additions for San Diego this offseason. The team signed Kevin Smith and Sean Ham, formerly of the Spiders, back in December 2016.

The six new players will joined by the following returners to the 2017 Growlers roster: Steven Milardovich, Trevor Purdy, Matt Parisi, Travis Dunn, and Nathan Bridges. San Diego finished last in the West Division last season with a 2-12 record. Four of their losses were by three goals or fewer.
